I think the stream represents life and mortality. The child is a being who not only idolizes god, but also strives to emulate Him (as seen by the collector's card of Jesus on the wall behind his head.) The child is not content to play God as a silent spectator to watch the ducks flow steadily to their demise at the waterfall. Instead, the child descends upon one of the ducks with wanton delight, displaying his power to bring death and pain for no other reason than a mere childish whim.
