Acrylic on canvas, 16x20 inches.

A new piece.

This is one of those paintings that had it's title before I'd even begun it, for whatever reason. I suppose because I've been listening to the music of Holst a lot recently (he wrote a lot more than The Planets, BTW).

I was aware of Kalidasa's poem "The Cloud Messenger" via the choral work of the same name by Gustav Holst - a piece I've admired since 1990 (when it was fist recorded). But, I'd never actually read the poem, preferring to enjoy Holst's interpretation as absolute music. When I did finally do so - after the painting was finished - I was somewhat intrigued by one particular verse:

Thou only, happy lover! canst repair
The desolation that thine absence made:
Her shrinking current seems the careless hair
That brides deserted wear in single braid,
And dead leaves falling give her face a paler shade...

Cosmic, man :pills:

Thanks for looking =)

It's always my pleasure to look at your work. And thank you.

Glad to know you know that Holst was more than his popular The Planets. I love the sound of some German, Russian, Italian et al composers and don't often care about the lyrics. Appreciate what you found in Holst's inspiration. Kalidasa. This is new to me. Always more in your work than meets the eye. This "cosmic" coincidence would make one a mystic.

Thanks Robert. A good deal of Holst's output is waiting to be re-discovered

Love the texture in that jacket. I don't know what the material's called, but I remember what it feels like. :)

Something tells me her toffee-apple may not be entirely free of artificial colorings.

It seems that the snowman has been moonlighting in the off-season. ;)

I've spent ages trying to decide whether the leaves are blowing right to left, or from left to right!

I could go on, but this will have to suffice. A lovely work in terms of composition, depth and perspective.

Thanks Lloyd. And "as blows hair, so blows the leaves" ;)

The orientation and placement of the leaves is the first thing that jumped out at me...but I love the whole thing. Is that a tropical cyclone I see brewing in the Indian Ocean? Mark

I love the texture on the coat the jeans being unbuttoned but most of all I WANT a green candy apple. cause the red ones, eeww. They should make them green. I also love that she isn't paying attention to us. Wonderful piece.
